GreenHill Center for North Carolina Art Presents TERRA: A LANDSCAPE SURVEY

 

GREENSBORO, N.C. — GreenHill Center for North Carolina Art announces Terra: A Landscape Survey, a major exhibition exploring the landscape traditions and contemporary interpretations of our surroundings in the natural world by thirty artists from North Carolina and beyond. On view July 25 through November 7, 2026, the exhibition invites visitors to consider how artists engage the land as subject, memory, and shared resource.

 

Featuring paintings, works on paper, and fiber art, TERRA highlights artists inspired by national parks, trails and greenways and other wild spaces. The exhibition emphasizes places that remain largely untouched by development—mountains, wetlands, shorelines, and other natural environments—while also prompting reflection on public land, environmental stewardship, and the enduring cultural meaning of landscape.

 

Pictorial approaches to landscape by leading North Carolina artists include paintings by John Beerman of beaches of Normandy in a quiet luminist style and impressionist renderings of his mountain home in Grassy Creek by Richard Fennel. Bryce Lafferty’s cross sections of terrain explore the geological underpinnings of landscape, while AnaMarie Liddell and Jessie Shinn’s drawings depict worn stone cliffs and forest floors in intricate detail. Quilts by Ann Harwell and Sally Winzce and tapestries by Sandy Adair evoke Southwestern deserts and mountain waterfalls in cloth and fiber.

Associated programs will further explore themes of ecology, conservation, and connection to place through artist talks, guest lectures, and community partnerships and are free and open to the public.

Join artists for the opening of TERRA at GreenHill, a major survey exhibition exploring our connection to the natural world through the work of more than 30 of North Carolina’s leading landscape artists.

First Friday Musical Performance | Friday, August 7 | 6:00 – 7:00 PM

Save the date for a performance in the gallery by Nancy, Tad, & Keith, three song farmers harvesting their favorite numbers and serving them up with a side of vocal harmonies and heartfelt picking.

ArtBar Workshop | Terra Chroma with Katie Podracky | Wednesday, August 26 | 5:00 - 6:30 PM

Class participants (21+) will learn about handmade pigments created from NC clay, see the pigment-making process, and create a simple landscape painting using both natural and traditional pigments with Greensboro landscape painter Katie Podracky. Join artists from TERRA at GreenHill in the gallery for a roundtable discussion exploring the themes of the exhibition.
