A LEGACY HONORED, A VISION UNVEILED: GREENHILL PRESENTS SOLO EXHIBITION BY TARA THACKER IN THE BETTY AND BENJAMIN CONE JR. ALCOVE GALLERY
GREENSBORO, N.C. – GreenHill Center for North Carolina Art proudly announces the opening of a new solo exhibition by acclaimed North Carolina artist Tara Thacker, presented in the Betty and Benjamin Cone Jr. ALCOVE Gallery. This exhibition celebrates not only the intricate, avian-inspired ceramic and mixed-media works of Thacker, but also the enduring legacy of community leader and arts advocate, Betty Cone.
The show opens to the public on Thursday, September 18, from 6:00 – 8:00 PM, with light refreshments and a bar. Admission is free and open to all.
The Betty and Benjamin Cone Jr. ALCOVE Gallery was established in honor of Betty and Benjamin Cone Jr.’s transformative leadership in Greensboro’s arts and civic landscape. Known for her visionary role in co-founding the Eastern Music Festival and steering major community events such as Fun Fourth and the Festival of Lights, Betty’s tireless dedication to public life has shaped Greensboro into a vibrant cultural destination. Her commitment to elevating local and regional voices through the arts is deeply woven into the mission of GreenHill. The ALCOVE Gallery stands as a reflection of her belief in the power of artistic expression to shape community identity and civic pride.
The ALCOVE Gallery is a space designed for intimate encounters with bold vision. GreenHill Director of Curatorial & Artistic Programs Edie Carpenter shares: “The ALCOVE Gallery provides a new platform to highlight the singular voices in North Carolina’s visual arts community through bi-monthly exhibitions, artist talks and collector meetups.”
TARA THACKER TAKES FLIGHT: SOLO SHOW REIMAGINES THE AVIAN WORLD IN CERAMIC AND MIXED MEDIA
Tara Thacker’s exhibition in the ALCOVE Gallery offers an immersive journey into a world shaped by feathers, flight, and form. Drawing inspiration from the natural elegance of birds, Thacker transforms ceramic and mixed media materials into layered abstractions and delicate wing-like sculptures that suggest movement, fragility, and transformation. Her intricate process emphasizes both the tactile and the ethereal. The show highlights Thacker’s understanding of the expressive power of ceramics and mixed media to convey emotional, symbolic, and environmental resonance.
Thacker states: “At the heart of my artwork is a love of materiality and an ongoing fascination with the process of transformation. I am absorbed in a labor-intensive creative process, bordering on obsessive. Clay is my material of choice. .. .It is my intention to make works that you don’t immediately associate as being ceramic. . .and often appear soft or to be made of fabric rather that the hard fired surface that they are.”
